Home to indigenous communities, Comarca de Guna Yala is a marvelous island archipelago consisting of around 365 islands. This flourishing community and region offers a perfect island getaway – not only for one, but for multiple getaways.
Dotting the Caribbean coast of Panama, these islands with grooving palms and swirling white sand stretches from the Golfo de San Blas to the Colombian border. The archipelago, characterized by pristine tradition and exemplary ambiance, stands out as one of the best visits to paradise in Central America. Now, after the construction of the road to the Port of Gardi, it is even easier to access.
The destination is ideal for all purposes as well as all seasons.
Fulfilling All Your Purposes
If you want to explore the rich and vibrant culture of the Guna people, then you should visit a few of the largest islands in the region. Despite the flow of the tourists, the Guna people have preserved their culture.
Regarding the culture, you should be well informed before visiting these islands. Guna people are able to protect their beliefs only because they do not allow any visitor to violate their rules. The most prominent rule for visitors includes photographs. People here do not like to be clicked without first granting permission. They may even charge for getting clicked, but when you buy handicrafts, photographs usually come complimentary.
The culture includes fashion as well. The women wear beadwork from ankles to knees, handcrafted blouses, and molas. This is their customary attire of traditional prosperity. You can also choose to visit the more isolated islands if you want more time alone or with your romantic partner. The warm, turquoise water and picturesque white sands are idea for this. The beaches are glorious. You can relax or choose from lots of activities, including snorkeling, swimming, sailing, etc.
Exhilarating Throughout the Year
Whether the weather is rainy, sunny or chilly, you can always plan a trip to Comarca de Guna Yala. The best period for sailing is between December and April. During the calm season, there is little rainfall, but the winds from north and northeast encourage sailing. May and August are ideal for snorkeling as that is when visibility is at its best. October will show you the vibrant traditions of the Guna on full display. During this time, you can witness the spectacular annual traditional dance event organized at the Nogagope on Isla Tigre.
Among the 365 islands, two, in particular, stand out, providing the best facilities.
Yandup Island
Like all the islands in the Guna Yala Comarco, Yandup Island has pristine white sand beaches and turquoise waters, but it stands unique due to its location and facilities. In terms of location, it is well isolated, but you can also get exposed to the colorful culture of the Guna community. The best staying facilities are on Yandup Island as well. Both cabins and thatched roof huts over the water are available. However, there is no AC or Wi-Fi, but you will not need either as the goal is to experience a true island getaway.
In addition, the food is fresh and delicious, and likely prepared from the catch of the day, either fish, octopus, lobster, or shrimp.
The vibrant Guna community is only five minutes by boat on the island of Playon Chico. The most famous handicraft of Panama’s tradition, the mola, is made of sparkly-colored squares of cotton fabric sewn together. Molas are generally used in women’s blouses and are a wonderful piece of art, featuring landscapes and animals among geometric patterns.
The Cayos Holandéses
At the northwestern edge of the Guna Yala is the Cayos Holandéses, where you camping reigns supreme and the coral is truly a sight to see. What could be more relaxing than sitting alongside a white sand beach amidst the dancing palms and enjoying the view of the crystal-clear warm water from which dolphins occasionally emerge?
