Iglesia de San Francisco de la Montana
Declared a historical monument in 1937, this incredible church was built in 1727. Famous for its Baroque style, the structure is made of stone with a tower located above the front. The belfry used to be used as a lookout for the Spanish to keep an eye on the slaves and the indigenous peoples before it collapsed in 1942. Inside you will find colonial art, impeccable wood carvings, and a peaceful ambience.
More than four hundred pieces of wood carvings can be found here, including the ornate main altar of ash and cedar. Unlike most of the colonial altars brought to America from Europe, this one was carved flawlessly by local indigenous people. This place is no less than a museum, containing the stories of Panama’s colonial and religious past.
To get to the church, head 18 km north from the Interamericana highway. Take the San Francisco turnoff, and drive until you reach the police station located near a stop sign. Now, turn right, and continue until you see Supermercado Juan XXIII de San Francisco. Turn right again, and after 100 m, you will reach the exquisite church.
