El Valle de Anton Panama

El Valle de Antón: Things to Do in Panama’s Volcano Crater Town (2026)

El Valle de Antón, usually just called El Valle, is a small mountain town built inside the crater of a long-extinct volcano, about 2 to 2½ hours west of Panama City. At around 600 meters (2,000 feet), it’s noticeably cooler than the city. The top things to do are the Chorro El Macho waterfall, the India Dormida hike, the hot springs and mud baths, the El Níspero zoo with Panama’s golden frogs, and the Sunday market. Most attractions cost $1 to $10 to enter as of 2026.

Here’s what to do, what it costs, and how to get there.

Update, October 2026: after the magnitude 7.5 earthquake that hit the Azuero Peninsula on October 9, 2026, an aftershock landslide closed the Cerro La Cruz descent into El Valle. Panama’s Ministry of Public Works (MOP) closed it on October 19 for about a month and recommends reaching El Valle from the Pan-American Highway via Las Uvas (San Carlos), the route described below. Check the latest road news before you drive.

Best things to do in El Valle de Antón

1. Chorro El Macho waterfall

El Valle’s best-known waterfall drops about 35 meters (115 feet) through the rainforest, a couple of kilometers from the center of town. A short trail with hanging bridges leads to the viewpoint, and there’s a separate natural pool you can swim in for an extra fee. The canopy zipline here crosses right in front of the falls.

2. Hike La India Dormida

The ridge around the crater is shaped like a woman lying on her back, and the local legend tells of a chief’s daughter (called Flor del Aire in many versions) who died of heartbreak after being kept from the man she loved, and became the mountain. The most popular route climbs past waterfalls and petroglyphs to viewpoints over the whole valley. It’s about 3–4 km and takes 2–3 hours round trip. Go early for cooler temperatures and clearer views, wear shoes with grip, and skip it after heavy rain, when it gets slippery.

3. Soak in the hot springs and mud baths

The public thermal pools (Pozos Termales) are simple and inexpensive. You paint yourself with mineral mud, let it dry, rinse off and soak in the warm pools. It’s a classic El Valle experience, especially after a hike.

4. See golden frogs at El Níspero

El Níspero is a small zoo and botanical garden at the foot of Cerro Gaital. It’s home to the El Valle Amphibian Conservation Center (EVACC), which breeds Panamanian golden frogs and other species threatened by the chytrid fungus. The golden frog is a national symbol and is thought to be extinct in the wild, so this is one of the few places to see one.

5. Visit the Sunday market

The market in the center of town is open every day, but it’s busiest on Sundays. Look for fruits and vegetables, plants and orchids, ceramics, baskets, soapstone carvings, and molas made by Guna artisans.

6. Look for the square trees

Near the Hotel Campestre, a short trail leads to a grove of trees with oddly square-shaped trunks. Whether they’re truly square is up for debate, but the walk through the forest is pleasant.

7. Butterflies, orchids and petroglyphs

  • Butterfly Haven (Mariposario): a butterfly house with a garden and an explanation of their life cycles.
  • APROVACA: a community orchid conservation center with native species.
  • Piedra Pintada: a large boulder covered in pre-Columbian petroglyphs, which nobody has fully deciphered. Local kids often offer to guide you for a tip.

8. Hike Cerro Gaital

Cerro Gaital, in the Cerro Gaital Natural Monument, is the toughest hike around El Valle. The trail climbs through mossy cloud forest to a steep rock scramble at the top, with views to both oceans on clear days. Go in the dry season with good shoes and, ideally, a guide.

9. Bike or ride around the crater

The valley floor is flat, and many hotels rent bikes. Several outfitters also rent e-bikes or offer horseback rides.

How to get to El Valle de Antón

  • By bus: direct buses leave from the Albrook bus terminal in Panama City about every 30–45 minutes during the day. The trip takes about 2–2½ hours and costs around $4–$4.50 one way. Buses drop you on the main street.
  • By car: take the Pan-American Highway west to the turnoff at Las Uvas (near San Carlos), then about 25–30 km up a winding mountain road. About 2 hours without traffic, but Friday afternoon and Sunday evening traffic out of the city can be heavy. Read our guide to renting a car in Panama.
  • Shuttles and tours: private shuttles and day tours run from Panama City.

El Valle pairs well with a Pacific beach on the same trip, since the coast at Santa Clara and Farallón is less than an hour away. See Farallón and Playa Blanca and the best beaches in Panama.

Where to stay and eat

El Valle has options for every budget, from backpacker hostels to boutique hotels with spas and garden villas for groups. Book ahead for weekends and holidays. For food, you’ll find Panamanian fondas near the market, bakeries, and restaurants serving Spanish, Italian and international food. Fresh strawberries, local coffee and fruit drinks are easy to find.

El Valle de Antón FAQ

Is El Valle de Antón worth visiting?

Yes, if you want cooler air, easy nature and a slow small-town pace close to Panama City. It’s not dramatic like Boquete’s coffee highlands, but it’s much closer. Compare with our Boquete guide.

Can you do El Valle as a day trip from Panama City?

Yes, but leave early. With about 4–5 hours of round-trip travel, you’ll have time for two or three activities.

Is El Valle really inside a volcano?

Yes. The town sits on the floor of a large, long-extinct volcanic crater, surrounded by its eroded rim, which forms the hills and the India Dormida ridge.

Is El Valle safe?

El Valle is a quiet, low-crime town. Use normal precautions, don’t leave valuables in your car at trailheads, and don’t hike remote trails alone.
