Out of the islands forming part of the group, the most notable one is Contadora Island, known for its resorts. This ‘resort island’ hosts most of the homes owned by wealthy Panamanians. The largest island here, at 234 square km, is Isla del Ray; its size is greater than all the other Pearl islands combined. It is also the second-largest island in Panama after Coiba.

History

Rich in history and natural beauty, these islands were first inhabited by local indigenous tribes, such as the Gunas, Cuevas, and Cocle, who lived there till the sixteenth century when Spanish Conquistadors came in search of hidden treasures – the pearls that the islands are most famous for. Isla Contadora became the center of pearl counting, registering, and shipping during this period. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw the islands become a haven for criminals and pirates who hid here and looted the passing ships and the mainland. By the end of the eighteenth century, the islands were completely deserted and left for nature to reclaim. After a long desertion, the 1960s saw the Pearl Islands bloom again. In 1972, the first resort was established in Contadora, operational still today. The islands became world famous in 1979, when the exiled Shah of Iran took refuge there. The islands have since become a major tourist destination and a place of tranquility and luxury for the rich and famous all over the globe.
